What your temperatures actually mean

Scenario: you opened monitoring software and see 78°C under load — is that fine or dangerous? This rates the number against a typical safe ceiling for the part you selected.

Example: a CPU with a 90°C max running 38°C idle and 78°C load has a +12°C margin — “Healthy.” A GPU sitting at 95°C load is “Overheating” and should be cooled now before throttle or shutdown risk.

Boundaries: safe maxima are typical vendor specs and vary by model and generation. Transient spikes above the average are normal; sustained at or above max is the real risk. Ambient temperature shifts every number upward.

FAQ: what is a good idle temperature? 30–45°C idle is normal for modern parts at room temperature; a high idle often signals poor airflow or an overly passive fan curve.
