A 144 Hz panel shows at most 144 distinct frames per second. Running below that leaves the panel underused; matching or exceeding it (with FreeSync/G-Sync) gives the smoothest result. Higher Hz matters most in fast esports titles.

A monitor’s Hz is the maximum distinct frames it can show per second. For smooth, tear-free motion you want in-game FPS at or above that number (ideally with FreeSync/G-Sync).
