Plan your cooling before you overclock or run heavy loads

Thermals decide whether your CPU holds its clock or throttles. Match your cooler rating to the chip TDP and keep real headroom.

You picked a fast CPU, but speed on the box is not speed in your case. Once a chip hits its thermal limit it drops clocks to stay safe, and the performance you paid for quietly evaporates under the exact loads you bought it for — gaming, renders, compiles. Cooling is the gatekeeper, and most first-time builders under-budget it.

A cooler rated at or below the chip's TDP leaves no margin for summer ambient temps, dust, or a case with poor airflow — you want the cooler comfortably above TDP, especially if you plan to overclock or run sustained workloads.

Headroom also protects your power budget. A throttling CPU pulls less, but a stable one at full clock pulls more, and that feeds back into your supply sizing.
