Reading past the “1ms” marketing claim

Scenario: you are comparing monitors and see “1ms” everywhere. Real motion clarity depends on panel type and overdrive, not just the headline number.

Example: an IPS panel rated 5ms at Normal overdrive gives ~4ms effective with low ghosting; Extreme overdrive drops it to ~3ms but risks inverse ghosting (bright trails). OLED is effectively blur-free and needs little overdrive.

Boundaries: this estimates based on typical behavior; real panels vary and proper calibration uses a colorimeter. Overshoot depends on the specific model’s overdrive implementation, which this cannot measure.

FAQ: does overdrive always help? No — too-aggressive overdrive causes inverse ghosting. Match overdrive to your refresh rate, and remember sRGB is the safe everyday color baseline unless your content targets Adobe RGB or DCI-P3.
