When a drive is actually aging

Scenario: your SSD is a few years old and you wonder if it is wearing out, or your aged HDD feels slow on small files. This separates the two failure modes.

Example: a 600 TBW drive with 60 TB written is 10% used — “Healthy.” An HDD at 25% fragmentation shows a noticeable random-read penalty that a SSD would not.

Boundaries: SSD endurance is rated in TBW; most consumer drives outlive their useful performance window. Fragmentation matters for spinning disks, not SSDs — never defragment an SSD, only trim it.

FAQ: when should I replace an SSD? Once life used passes about 60% on a drive holding critical data, plan a replacement; near 90% replace soon. Back up regardless of wear — wear is only one failure mode.
