Throttling is the silent FPS killer — once a chip hits its thermal limit it drops clocks regardless of headroom. Cooling (see Thermal Headroom) protects this number; overclocking only helps if thermals allow it.
Throttle loss and overclock gain, explained

Scenario: you tuned a build, saw great FPS in reviews, but your own numbers sag under a long session. Heat is usually why — once a chip hits its thermal limit it drops clocks whether or not it could run faster.

Example: a card that benchmarks at 120 FPS but runs 10% hotter in your case might deliver ~108 FPS; a modest +8% overclock (if thermals allow) claws back to ~117 FPS. The calculator shows the net, not just each step.

Boundaries: this is a planning model, not a benchmark. Real throttle depends on your cooler, case airflow, and ambient temperature; overclock gains also depend on silicon lottery and whether thermals actually permit the higher clock.

FAQ: does lowering temperature raise FPS? Often yes — once you were throttling. Cooling headroom is what makes the number real (see Thermal Headroom and Cooling Efficiency).
