Dual-channel gives ~15–20% real-world FPS lift vs single stick — always populate both channels.

Estimates blend workload base load with per-app overhead. Always round up to a standard kit size (8/16/32 GB) for pricing and resale value.

How this calculator works

Each workload has a base RAM footprint (esports ~6 GB, AAA ~10 GB, 4K editing ~20 GB, 3D render ~24 GB), plus a per-background-app overhead. Resolution adds a small bonus for higher-res frame buffers and caches. Browser tabs are charged at ~120 MB each — closer to reality than the 1 GB-per-tab myth. Single-channel memory is penalized 15% because the CPU spends more cycles waiting. The three tiers are 70% / 100% / 140% of the raw estimate, rounded to standard kit sizes.

When to use it

Use this when speccing a new build, deciding between 16 GB and 32 GB, or troubleshooting stutters on a low-end laptop. The single most common upgrade mistake is adding a mismatched stick and landing in single-channel — the calculator flags that penalty explicitly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 16 GB still enough for gaming in 2026?
For most AAA titles at 1440P, yes — if you close background apps. Heavy multitaskers (streaming, 50+ tabs, Discord, Spotify) will feel the ceiling and should move to 32 GB.
DDR4 or DDR5?
For new builds on AM5 or Intel LGA1851, DDR5. DDR4 still makes sense budget-upgrading older platforms. Speed matters more than the generation: 6000 MT/s CL30 DDR5 is the current sweet spot.
Why does single-channel cost FPS?
Single-channel halves memory bandwidth. The CPU feeds the GPU more slowly, costing 15–20% FPS in CPU-bound 1080P titles. Always populate two matched sticks.
Do I need 64 GB?
Only for heavy 4K video editing, large 3D scenes, or running multiple VMs. For pure gaming, 32 GB is the practical ceiling today.
