How this calculator works

Frame time is simply 1000 ÷ refresh (Hz). Perceptual input lag is approximated as half the frame time (the average wait until a new frame is shown) plus the pixel response time (GtG). PPI is the diagonal pixel count ÷ diagonal inches. The VRR guidance compares your chosen refresh rate against the monitor's FreeSync / G-Sync window: inside the range you get tear-free low-latency play; above the ceiling you should cap FPS and enable VSync; below the floor, Low Framerate Compensation kicks in.

When to use it

Use this when tuning game FPS caps, picking a new monitor, or figuring out why a 144 Hz panel still feels laggy (often a response-time or VRR-range issue rather than refresh). For competitive titles, aim for a perceptual input lag under 10 ms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Higher Hz always equals less input lag?
Mostly yes — higher refresh shortens frame time, which shortens the wait for a new frame. But a 1 ms vs 5 ms GtG panel difference is often swamped by processing lag. Both matter.
Should I cap FPS at the refresh rate?
For VRR monitors, cap a few FPS below the ceiling (e.g. 141 on a 144 Hz panel) so VRR stays active and you avoid the VSync-on latency spike at the ceiling.
What is LFC?
Low Framerate Compensation. When FPS drops below your monitor's VRR floor, the GPU duplicates frames to stay inside the VRR range, avoiding tearing without VSync lag.
Is 4K at 27" too dense?
At ~163 PPI, 4K 27" is sharp but Windows scaling (125–150%) is mandatory. For pure competitive play, 1440P 27" (~109 PPI) is the common sweet spot.
