How the tool works

The estimator computes three things:

  • Per-fan dBA — based on fan size, RPM, and bearing type. A 120mm fan at 1000 RPM is ~18–22 dBA; at 2000 RPM, ~30–35 dBA.
  • Summed fan dBA — decibels add logarithmically. Two identical fans add ~3 dBA; ten add ~10 dBA. Doubling fans is not doubling perceived loudness.
  • Total system dBA — fans + AIO pump (~25 dBA healthy, more if air-bound or failing) + HDD vibration (10–20 dBA per drive, amplified by case resonance).

The tool compares the total to room context: under 30 dBA is whisper-quiet; 35–40 dBA is noticeable; above 45 dBA is intrusive. Background room noise is usually 30–35 dBA, so a PC at 35 dBA blends in.

Step-by-step usage

  1. Enter your fan count, size, and approximate RPM for intake and exhaust.
  2. Enter your AIO pump if applicable (yes/no, RPM).
  3. Enter your HDD count if any (HDDs vibrate and resonate).
  4. Note your case — solid panel cases dampen noise; mesh front cases let noise out.
  5. Read the total dBA and the verdict. Above 40 dBA, consider quieter fans, lower RPM, or vibration isolation.
