The stutter nobody warns you about

You build a new PC, crank everything to Ultra, and the game stutters every few seconds even though your FPS counter says 90. Nine times out of ten the cause is VRAM: your settings want more memory than the card has, so the engine streams textures in and out of system RAM, and every stream is a stutter. The FPS average looks fine; the experience is rough.

How the tool works

The estimator starts from a baseline VRAM cost per resolution (modern AAA at Ultra, no RT) and scales it by quality preset. Ray tracing adds acceleration structures — light RT adds ~1.2 GB, full path tracing adds ~3 GB. HD texture packs and background apps (browser, Discord, OBS) add their own budgets on top. The total is compared against common card VRAM tiers (4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 24 GB) and you get a status: comfortable, fine, needs 12 GB+, or will exceed most cards.

Step-by-step usage

  1. Pick your resolution and quality preset to match the settings you actually want to run.
  2. Set the ray-tracing level — this is the single biggest VRAM swing.
  3. Add HD texture packs / mods if your game uses them (GB estimate).
  4. Add background apps — Chrome with 40 tabs and OBS both count.
  5. Read the status. If it says "will exceed," drop quality one notch or disable RT before you blame the GPU.

  • Stutter every few seconds with good average FPS — texture streaming from VRAM overflow. Drop quality or RT.
  • "8 GB is enough" claims crashing on a new AAA title — modern Ultra textures at 2K/4K regularly exceed 8 GB. The estimator flags this.
  • Performance drops the longer you play — VRAM fills up as the engine caches more; a card with no headroom gets worse over a session.
  • HDR + RT tanks performance — both add VRAM overhead; the estimator accounts for RT.

Pro tips

  • High VRAM usage alone is not a problem. Engines pre-allocate memory they do not strictly need. Stutter and pop-in are the real warning signs.
  • Close Chrome while gaming. Hardware-accelerated tabs eat VRAM; 40 tabs can add a couple of GB.
  • Upscalers (DLSS/FSR) reduce VRAM too, because they render at a lower internal resolution. Quality mode is a free VRAM win.
  • 24 GB is for content creation and extreme mods, not gaming. Do not overspend on VRAM you will never fill.

How much VRAM do I need for 4K gaming?
Most modern AAA titles want 12–16 GB at 4K Ultra. 8 GB cards will stream textures and stutter; 24 GB is only useful for content creation or extreme mods.
Why does VRAM usage sit at 99% but FPS is fine?
Engines pre-allocate VRAM they do not strictly need. High usage alone is not a problem — stutter and pop-in are the real warning signs.
Does ray tracing use more VRAM?

Should I close Chrome while gaming?
