The 4000Hz mouse that wasn't worth it
High polling rate mice are the latest esports arms race. 1000Hz is standard, 4000Hz is the new premium, and 8000Hz is on the horizon. The marketing says lower latency, smoother tracking, better aim. The reality is more nuanced: 4000Hz cuts 0.75ms of latency versus 1000Hz, quadruples your CPU's interrupt load, and drains wireless mice faster. For most players, 1000Hz is plenty. For top-tier esports on 240Hz+ monitors, the gap is real but small.

How the tool works
The calculator computes four things:
- Per-poll latency — 1000 ÷ polling rate. 125Hz = 8ms, 500Hz = 2ms, 1000Hz = 1ms, 2000Hz = 0.5ms, 4000Hz = 0.25ms.
- Average input latency — half the per-poll latency, since a movement can arrive anywhere in the polling window. This is the number that matters for feel.
- CPU overhead estimate — interrupts per second × per-interrupt cost. 1000Hz = 1000 interrupts/sec, 4000Hz = 4000 interrupts/sec. On weak CPUs, the extra load can hurt FPS, partially offsetting the latency gain.
- Refresh-rate pairing — flags when polling rate is much higher or lower than your monitor's refresh. A 1000Hz mouse on a 60Hz monitor wastes most of the polls; a 125Hz mouse on a 240Hz monitor lags behind every frame.
Step-by-step usage

- Enter your monitor's refresh rate. Pairing matters — high polling is wasted on low refresh.

- 1000Hz is the sweet spot for most players. 1ms latency, manageable CPU load, fine battery life. Upgrade only if you have a specific reason.
- 4000Hz is for top-tier esports on 240Hz+ monitors. The 0.75ms gap matters at the margin; it is invisible to most players. Do not overspend for placebo.
- Pair polling rate to refresh rate. A 1000Hz mouse on a 60Hz monitor wastes most polls. A 125Hz mouse on a 240Hz monitor lags behind every frame.
- Wireless mice match wired latency at 1000Hz. Modern wireless is not the bottleneck it used to be. Below 1000Hz, wired is still more consistent for competitive play.
- CPU overhead is real on weak chips. 4000Hz quadruples the interrupt load of 1000Hz. If your CPU is already pinned, the FPS hit can offset the latency gain.
