This is the question that sends builders down a rabbit hole. You drop $700 on a new GPU and your frames barely move. Or you swap in a faster CPU and nothing changes. Nine times out of ten the answer is a bottleneck you did not account for — and it is not always the part you think. Sometimes the limiter is the CPU, sometimes the GPU, sometimes RAM, and sometimes a power supply quietly sagging under transients.
The Hardware Load Bottleneck Detector takes your component mix, your resolution, your RAM config and your PSU load band, then names the part that is actually holding you back. It runs locally and gives you a verdict plus an upgrade order.
How the tool works
The detector scores your CPU and GPU on a normalized 100-point scale, then weights them by resolution. At 1080P the GPU finishes frames fast, so the CPU carries more weight — that is why CPU tests run at 1080P. At 4K the GPU becomes the limiter and the CPU barely matters. The weighted scores are compared, and the lower one is your limiter.
On top of that, it layers two sanity checks:
- RAM check — flags below-8GB (page-file thrashing) and tight 16GB configs, plus a single-channel penalty that quietly costs 15–20% of your real FPS.
- PSU sag check — if your system peak is above 75% of the PSU rating, transient spikes can force the GPU to drop clocks, which looks like a GPU bottleneck but is really a power-delivery problem.
Step-by-step usage
- Enter CPU and GPU tiers honestly. An entry CPU with an ultra GPU at 4K is not "balanced."
- Enter RAM amount, speed, layout and rank. 4 sticks and dual-rank kits stress the memory controller and may force a speed drop.
- Pick your resolution — this is the single biggest input. A 1080P verdict differs from a 4K verdict on the same hardware.
- Enter PSU wattage and your measured system peak. If you don't have a measurement, estimate from the PC Wattage Calculator.
- Read the verdict. The tool names the limiter and tells you what to upgrade first for the biggest gain at your resolution.
Common hardware problems this tool solves
- "GPU usage sits at 70% in game" — you are CPU-bound, not GPU-bound. Upgrading the GPU will not help until the CPU moves up a tier.
- "FPS is the same at 1080P Medium and 1080P Ultra" — classic CPU bottleneck; the GPU is waiting.
- "Stutter only in heavy fights" — could be RAM (single-channel or too little) or a PSU sagging on transient spikes. The detector separates them.
- "1440P feels smoother than 1080P after the GPU upgrade" — you shifted the limiter from CPU to GPU, which is exactly what a GPU upgrade should do.

Pro tips
- Every system has a bottleneck — that is fine. The goal is to be limited by the part you intended (usually the GPU for gaming). A wrong bottleneck wastes money.
- Confirm the verdict in real life. Watch GPU utilization in a benchmark: 99% = GPU-bound, 70% with one CPU core pinned at 100% = CPU-bound.
- Single-channel RAM is the silent FPS killer. If you built with one stick "for now," adding a matching stick is the cheapest FPS upgrade you will ever buy.
- PSU bottlenecks mimic GPU bottlenecks. Before blaming the card, check whether it downclocks under load — that points at power delivery, not silicon.
